The Province of Manitoba has introduced a new budget that includes up to a $4,000 rebate for new owned or leased electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Additionally, qualifying pre-owned vehicles are eligible for a rebate of up to $2,500.
Provincial EV Incentive: How It Works
For electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), the incentive program offers the following:
- Incentives: Up to $4,000 for new and $2,500 for pre-owned electric vehicles.
- Eligibility: Vehicles must have a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of less than $70,000 and be less than 4 years old (model year 2021 or newer in 2024).
- Rebate Determination: Rebates are determined at the time of registration with Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), starting July 1, 2024.
- Qualifying Purchases: Purchases made between August 1, 2023, and March 31, 2026.
- Dealership Requirement: Vehicles must be purchased or leased through a Manitoba dealership.
- Lease Proportionality: For leased vehicles, the rebate is proportional to the length of the lease.
- Limit: One incentive per registered vehicle owner and vehicle, cheque received after payment from MPI
Federal Zero Emission Vehicle Incentive (iZEV): How It Works
The federal government is making it more affordable to switch to the electric lifestyle while reducing greenhouse gas emissions through incentives for the purchase of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The iZEV Program provides incentives at the point of sale to qualified consumers purchasing or leasing eligible ZEVs. These incentives are applicable for vehicles bought or leased for a minimum of 12 months starting from the eligibility date.
Types of Federal Incentives
Battery Electric, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Longer-Range Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles
- Eligible for up to $5,000
- Longer-range plug-in hybrid vehicles must have an electric range of 50 km or more
Shorter-Range Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles
- Eligible for up to $2,500
- Shorter-range plug-in hybrid vehicles have an electric range of less than 50 km
iZEV Specifics:
- Receive the incentive at the point-of-sale by the dealership once they have confirmed your eligibility. The incentive will appear directly on the bill of sale or lease agreement once you have completed a Consumer Consent Form and appropriate Incentive Received Form.
- Incentives for 12-month leases will be adjusted proportionally according to a 48-month lease term. For instance, a 48-month lease qualifies for the complete incentive, whereas a 24-month lease will receive half the incentive amount.
- Individuals are eligible for one incentive.
